Leadership
Ryan Carlson
Director, Black Mountain Expeditions
After earning his B.S. in Outdoor Education, Ryan worked in wilderness education for seven years at Ohio Wesleyan University and the CCO. With certifications and trainings from the American Alpine Institute, Wilderness Education Association, SOLO, WMA, WMI, Leave No Trace, American Mountain Guide Association, Professional Climbing Guides Association, and American Canoe Association, Ryan has led numerous alpine expeditions to the summit of mountains in Washington, Wyoming, California, New Hampshire, and Bolivia. Outdoor education is Ryan’s passion, and he has taught kayaking, canoeing, rock climbing, caving, backpacking, and outdoor leadership for over a decade. Ryan believes there is purpose in wilderness and adventure experiences:” Exploring creation together through adventure brings new discoveries about ourselves, our families, and our God. We seek to facilitate purposeful space for individuals, families and groups who desire deeper fulfillment from their experiences.”
Adventures mark many of the reference points that are pivotal in my life journey. It is a privilege to be a part of a program that will be one of these reference points for so many.
Adam and Ann Boyd
Merri-Mac Directors
Adam grew up in a camping family so it is not a surprise that he and Ann met while working for Adam’s father on summer staff at Merri-Mac. After graduating from Wofford College, and later earning an M.Div. from Reformed Theological Seminary, they returned to camp in 1992 where Adam began developing expedition and wilderness programs as extensions of their summer camp programs. Adam holds certifications as a Wilderness First Responder, Level 1 Rope Technician, and Single Pitch instructor for both the Professional Climb Instructor Association and American Mountain Guide Association.
Dan Singletary
Timberlake Director
Dan Singletary joined our staff in the summer of 2000. It was at that time that he fell in love with both the camp and his now wife, Annie. Dan is a graduate of the University of Mississippi, an avid fly-fisherman, kayaker, and outdoors man. In addition to these skills, Dan brings to Black Mountain Expeditions a significant expertise in staff hiring and development. Annie began with us as a camper at age seven and has since served as a counselor, CIT Director, Riding Director, and Program Director. She works as a professional potter when not helping at camp.
